Origin of the Blueberry Strain

The Blueberry strain was created in the seventies by cannabis grower, DJ Short. Born in Detroit, Daniel John Short was obsessed with the cannabis plant and since the late seventies, he started getting into cloning and experimenting with cannabis breeding. He is the father of many cannabis strains that are known worldwide.

Because of his expertise in breeding cannabis strains, Short earned a place in the High Times Seed Bank Hall of Fame as one of the brave pot pioneers and trailblazers. He got his passion and interest in cannabis from his great grandmother who was a Romanian gypsy who cultivated cannabis for medical purposes. She passed down her knowledge to her daughter who passed it on to her son, DJ Short.

DJ Short’s Strains

Blueberry is widely-known and an Indica hybrid with strong genetics that includes a lineage of the Indica Afghani, Sativa Thai, and Purple Thai variants. In his day, DJ Short was known as the Willy Wonka of Pot, Wizard of Weed, and Cannabis Professor. Through some experimentation, DJ Short came up with two awesome strains namely the Flo and the Blueberry.

The Blueberry strain has an unmistakable blueberry aroma that makes it an enduring favorite. It also won the 2000 Cannabis Cup for the Best Indica and Best Overall Strain. With a THC content of 15%- 24%, it is a popular strain in the cannabis community.

Flo is a 17% THC love child that came from breeding the Purple Thai and Afghani Indica. It was also a Cannabis Cup winner in 1996. The plant has pear-shaped buds with shades of purple and the effects bring on clear thought and light energy levels.

The Blue Family

DJ Short continued with his cannabis breeding sharing the genetics with other growers, which ultimately resulted in the ‘Blue family’ that comprises hundreds of strains that are descendants from the Blueberry.

The main characteristics of the Blue family are the fruity, sweet tastes similar to blackberries, blueberries, and grape. Many of these strains exhibit violet and purples tones when flowering and they typically form dense, hard buds. The yields are phenomenal making this a great choice for growers.

DJ Short went traveling across Europe during the nineties and worked for several seed banks. When he worked with the Sagarmatha Seed Company, he supplied them with seeds and working in breeding projects. Today, Sagarmatha Seed Bank still sells the Blue Family seeds. The relationship between Sagarmatha and Short didn’t last too long, and Short went off to work with Dutch Passion, a different seed bank. Dutch Passion also continues to sell strains from the Blue family.

Blueberry Strains

This hybrid strain was made popular by Ludacris who sang sweet lyrics about this popular bud. A descendant of the Blueberry Indica, it is thought to have been bred with the Durban Poison Sativa.
